The exquisiteness of the work produced by the 43-year-old tattoo artist from Taoyuan County earned him victories in the categories of Large Black and Grey, Large Color and Best Sleeve. Entitled Sun, Coco and Cici, respectively, the pieces were also recognized for their detailed illustrations and vivid colors.
According to Ho, his interest in the art form dates back to when he was 18. “My passion for sketching and painting when I was a business major in school led me to open a tattoo business a few years later.
“My family was not happy to see me pursuing tattoo art. It was once thought that only gang members and prostitutes wore tattoos on their arms and legs.”
But a decade ago, Taiwan started to see tattoo exhibitions and contests held nationwide, Ho said, adding that the public is slowly beginning to recognize tattoos as a valid form of art.
A judge in many local contests, Ho said he wants to help Taiwan artists improve their skills. This goal has spurred him to participate in global competitions and learn new developments in the field. (DF-JSM)
